My mother has a goiter and my father has diabetes. Is there any chance that I may get or acquire these diseases? What are the things to do and healthy diet in order to prevent from acquiring these diseases?

Diabetes: Diabetes is a disordered metabolism syndrome, formed by a combination of hereditary and environmental causes that results in high blood sugar levels. Diabetes is hereditary, and if one of your parents suffers from diabetes, your chances of getting it are very high.

Diet For Preventing Diabetes And Goitre

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day. Eat different kinds of fruits and vegetables as snacks to reduce your diabetes.

Soluble fibers are found in fruits and vegetables. These are very good for diabetes patients. The absorption of glucose from the intestines is reduced by these fibers. Legumes are rich in soluble fibers and should be consumed by those suffering from diabetes.

Reduce your intake of sugars and sweets as these will have an adverse effect on your health, especially if you suffer from diabetes.

Goiter: Goiter is the enlargement of the thyroid which occurs when the thyroid gland is not functioning properly. The thyroid becomes so large that it can be seen in the neck. Another form of goiter is called toxic nodular goiter. It is caused by the excess production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. Goiter also runs in the family, so if your mother is suffering from goiter, you can also get the disease.
Diet for Goiter patients

Goiter is caused by the deficiency of iodine. Foods that are rich in iodine should be consumed for treating goiter. Pineapples, strawberries, citrus fruits, egg yolk, sea food, whole rice, tomatoes, oats, onion, carrot, garlic, and lettuce are examples of foods that are rich in iodine. Cucumber is effective for treating goiter and should be included in the daily diet.

When goiter first starts appearing, the patients should consume fresh juices of fruits such as orange, apple, grape and pineapple in excess. Going on a juice fast is also recommended.

Goiter patients should avoid drinks like alcohol, carbonated drinks, and coffee. Food with very high sugar must also be avoided. Heavy and sour foods should be used very occasionally as they trigger the symptoms of Goiter.

Besides food, slow exercises such as neck stretches help to stretch the muscles attached with the thyroid gland. Walking for 30–45 minutes every day is also recommended.

Diet Menu For Diabetes And Diet For Gastritis

I am a diabetic patient on insulin and just found out that I have gastritis too. I am in awe of what to eat, also I have had a heart attack, so I have to consider that as well. Please suggest some healthy diet

The characteristics of a healthy diet are almost always essentially the same, no matter what you are suffering from, and even if you are in perfect health. The main difference is that when you are suffering from a health problem, you need to be a lot stricter about certain things that directly affect that ailment. Therefore, your diet basically needs to include all the necessary nutrients and food groups, should have plenty of fruits and vegetables, should not be too high in fats, and should include sources of protein such as lean meat or dairy products, or both.

Recommended Diet For Diabetes

Since you have a heart problem, your intake of salt and fat in particular need to be monitored. You have not mentioned the causes of the heart attack, but these of course need to be taken into account. Commonly, high cholesterol and high blood pressure are responsible, along with obesity. If you are obese, then you should seriously try to lose weight – this does not need to happen right away, but you should gradually regain a healthy body weight over the next few months through exercise and diet. Primarily, you need to reduce your intake of fat – avoid red meat as far as possible, and ensure that all the other foods you eat are also low fat.

For the gastritis, you will need to stick to light, easily digestible foods as far as possible. Here again, fruits and vegetables are extremely healthy, of course as long as you do not cook them using too much of oil or spices. Spicy food will of course directly irritate your stomach, while fatty food will worsen the acidity. For your protein needs, light meats such as fish are to be preferred. You need to avoid alcohol completely, especially over the next three or four days, till your stomach gets back to normal. If your gastritis is chronic, then of course all these guidelines must be observed for good.

For diabetes too, it is generally recommended that the intake of fatty food is reduced, and this is something that you need to do anyway. Your intake of sugar of course needs to be controlled. Unfortunately, this means keeping track of your fruit consumption too, as fruits tend to be high in sugars. It is therefore advisable to severely limit sugar from all other sources, as most of these sources do not provide much real nutrition, while continuing to eat lots of fruits.

Diet For Hypothyroidism And Diabetes Nutrition

I am thyroid patient and my weight has increased considerably in last two years. Is it due to the medicines prescribed for control of diabetes or is there any other reason? Please recommend healthy diet

Thyroid disease is a result of inadequate hormone (thyroid) levels, treatment of hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer or nodules and iodine deficiency disorder. Heredity plays a vital role in thyroid related diseases. Weight gain is one of the symptoms, associated with thyroid disease. Other symptoms of thyroid problems are high cholesterol, dry hair, anemia, constipation, infertility, depression, deafness and so on. Dietary modifications require the restricted intake of goitrogens, which are substances, inherent in food. They oppose or obstruct with the functioning of the gland and secretion of the hormone. Cruciferous vegetables like mustard, broccoli, cabbage, mustard and turnips and soy products are not recommended. Certain other foods with goitrogen are spinach, broccoli, mustard, peach, soy tofu, peanut, millet and strawberries. Iodine containing foods are avoided by individuals with hypothyroidism, such as shellfish, multivitamins, dairy products, processed foods and metabolic boosters.

Healthy Diet For Diabetes And Thyroid

Diabetes is associated with thyroid problems. Insulin resistance is related to thyroid diseases. High protein and low carbohydrate diet is generally recommended. A balance in the intake of fiber, carbohydrate, fat and protein is provided by such kind of meals. This in turn results in a moderate rise in the blood glucose level, due to a gradual entry of glucose in the bloodstream. This process regulates the quantity of insulin release, which causes a decrease in the calorie storage. The calories, which are taken in are put to use. Decrease the intake of certain foods, such as bagels, white bread, refined foods, rolls, beets, corn, parsnips, peas, carrots, potatoes, turnips, oranges, grapes, pineapple, papaya, bananas and watermelon. White rice, sugar, semolina and baked goods are a complete ‘no-no’, in case of thyroid disease and diabetes.

Diabetic condition calls for the intake of several small meals, instead of the regular three meal pattern. About five to six small meals help in the prevention of sudden rise in the blood glucose levels. It also protects the individual form sudden hypoglycemic shocks. Lean protein in the form of white meat poultry, lean cuts of beef and fish are preferred. Hair loss, a common problem associated with thyroid disease is decreased with protein intake. About 25 grams of dietary fiber is recommended on a daily basis. Fiber is a complex carbohydrate, which helps in the required insulin production. Certain foods, which are rich in fiber, such as apples, lentils, cauliflower, whole grains, almonds, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, kidney beans and pears are beneficial. A multi vitamin supplement, especially with selenium and zinc proves effective.

Information About What is Mediterranean Diet And Diet For Diabetes

How effective are Mediterranean diets for the cure of diabetes? Also do let me know other diet plans which are effective

Mediterranean diet is a healthy diet, which proves beneficial for individuals with heart diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a healthy eating technique, comprising of whole grains, fruits, veggies and fish. It limits the intake of unhealthy fats and emphasizes on olive oil, which is unsaturated. Variations in the intake of certain foods make a difference, as the Mediterranean diet decreases the risk of diabetes. The most vital components of the diet are:

Small portions of nut

More amounts of vegetables and fruits

Regular intake of fish

Moderate intake of wine

Decrease the intake of red meat. Highly processed meats, such as barbecues, sausages and bacon are not preferred. De-skinned poultry and fish are better alternatives

Include healthy and monounsaturated fats such as canola and olive oil.

Detox Diet For Type 2 Diabetes

The concentration of complex carbohydrates in fruits, whole grains and vegetables is high, which is highly helpful in diabetes. Veggies and fruits are also abundant in antioxidants, which indirectly prevent other complications, associated with diabetes, such as atherosclerosis, cancer and osteoporosis. The amount of trans fats in whole grains is less. Butter or margarine, which is loaded with oodles of trans fats are abstained from, in a Mediterranean diet. Inclusion of olive oil, a rich source of monounsaturated fat, aids in the reduction of ‘bad’ or LDL cholesterol. They also contain, linolenic acid, which is a kind of omega 3 fatty acid. Though healthy, their use is restricted, as they are rich in calories. Peanut butter is a good alternative for hydrogenated fat. This beneficial essential fatty acid (omega 3) is also present in fish. The former helps in circulation and healthy blood vessels. Omega 3 fatty acids also aid in the decrease in triglycerides. Tree nuts are low in saturated fats, in comparison to others. Almonds, walnuts, hazel nuts and pecans are high in calories, but low in saturated fats. Salted and honey coated nuts are better avoided.

A healthy diet plan can be created by every individual. A basic knowledge about carbohydrate counting and Exchange list is necessary. Exchange lists, comprises of a list of foods, which contain the same amount of fats, protein and carbohydrates. They have an analogous effect on the blood glucose levels, like the other foods, in the same group. The ultimate objective of a diabetic diet is to lower the blood glucose. Eat the right food at the right time, to derive maximum benefits.

Diabetes Crash Diet Plan And Diet For The Prevention Of Kidney Stones

Hi, my father is 65 years old, recently his bone above ankle has been removed due to diabetes. I would like to know the diet plan for him. He also has stones in his kidneys. Please let me know the diet plan for him

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, which is accompanied by an increase in blood glucose levels. It results in a number of complications, such as retinopathy, neuropathy, renal problem, and circulatory problems. Diabetes affects circulation, by affecting the nerves. It results in insensitivity of the nerves and causes a tingling sensation. It results in numbness of the feet, thereby resulting in easy infection. Deep infections result in amputation of the affected area. It is essential to keep your father’s diet strict and healthy. He needs a lot of support from the family, as the amputation takes a toll on the psychological health of the individual.

I need information regarding his height and weight, to check out, if he’s in ideal body weight range. A healthy and well planned diet with lifestyle modification helps. Regular exercise is possible, in case of artificial legs. Eat five or six meals and snacks, instead of the usual three meal pattern. A good breakfast peps up the day. Oats, readymade cereals or toast with eggs are good. Avoid skipping meals. Anxiety and depression might result in his not eating. Increase the intake of skimmed milk. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains and cereals prove beneficial.

Personalized Diet Plan For Diabetes

Saturation of the urine with a particular mineral, thereby resulting in reduced solubility causes stone formation. The kind of stone determines the kind of diet, the most common being calcium or oxalate stones. High oxalate foods are avoided, due to renal stones. Some of the high oxalate foods are pecans, tea, chocolates, beet roots, almonds, peanuts and spinach. Avoid processed foods, as they are rich in sodium. Increase the intake of fluids, as these help in the elimination of stones, through the urine. About eight to ten ounces of water is recommended. Low fat yoghurt and cheese with skimmed milk are not helpful in the case of calcium stones. Calcium from these foods is easy to absorb.

Certain food sources of calcium are ice cream, milkshakes, yoghurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese, custard, pudding, butter milk and so on. Minimal amounts of calcium are necessary, for the basic functions of the system. Oxalate rich foods that are not taken for oxalate stones are spinach, chocolate, strawberries, rhubarb, tea, nuts, wheat bran and beets. Animal protein aggravates renal stones and is better avoided. Vitamin C supplements are not taken, as they result in oxalate production. Packaged foods are not recommended, as they contain high levels of sugars.
