Everyone’s scalp produces sebum which moisturizes the hair and scalp. The amount of sebum produced differs from individual to individual and at various times in one’s life too. Less sebum being produced results in a dry scalp. Reasons for this include nutritional deficiency, harsh shampoos, pollution etc.

Reach for the following products easily found at home to treat a dry scalp. Most home remedies for dry scalp require you to massage the mixture into your scalp for 2-3 minutes, then wrap your head in a plastic wrap and towel for another 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water for at least a minute, and then shampoo as usual.

Dilute ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with ¼ cup water. Add 2 drops of lavender oil and 1 teaspoon of honey to this. Apply this on the scalp and leave on for ½ hour. Wash off with warm water. Do this twice a week.

Mix one egg in some yogurt and rub into the scalp after shampooing. Leave it for 10 minutes. This helps to condition the hair and relieves dryness too.

Massage your scalp daily for about two minutes. This will stimulate the follicles which increase sebum production.

Make your own hair oil for massaging. Combine an ounce of almond oil and 3 drops each of lavender essential oil, vitamin B oil and vitamin E oil. Each of these oils is extremely beneficial for the scalp.

Milk and honey is another excellent remedy. Combine ½ cup milk with ¼ cup honey, add 2 teaspoons of extra dry virgin oil. Apply this and leave on for two hours after shampooing. The vitamin D in the milk is good for soothing the scalp and honey is a natural moisturizer for the hair.

Aloe Vera juice also helps to moisturize the hair. You can use it as often as you like as it does not make your hair look oily or dirty. Make sure you buy the aloe Vera juice that does not have any added sugar.

Heat a little olive oil or herbal oil and massage this into your hair. Use a wide toothed comb to then comb your hair and massage once again. Use a plastic cap to cover your hair and then wrap a towel around your head. Leave on overnight for the best results and use a baby shampoo to wash this off.

Eat a diet rich in vitamin E (tomatoes, almonds, sunflower seeds etc) and omega-3 Fatty acids (strawberries, halibut , broccoli etc )which help to moisturize your skin and scalp from inside.

Dry scalp occurs when the scalp is stripped of its natural oils. Dryness of the scalp can result in itching and dandruff which further aggravates the problem. Sores and lesions may also occur on the scalp due to scratching. The skin, including the scalp, loses its natural moisture due to factors such as pollution and harsh weather. The use of hard water to wash the hair may also have an adverse effect on the scalp. Many shampoos contain high amounts of chemicals in them and these can dry out the scalp. The diet also plays an important role in the health of the scalp and hair. Poor nutrition is likely to lead to dryness of the scalp and dull hair. To alleviate the problem of dry scalp, switch to a milder shampoo, preferably an herbal one. Also avoid using hot water to wash your hair. Massaging your scalp with warm olive oil or almond oil will also help to reduce dryness. Eating healthy is also very helpful in ensuring the health of the scalp. Consume plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits and include a multivitamin in your diet. Vitamin B and vitamin C are known to be beneficial for healthy scalp and hair.

Home Remedies for Pimples, Blackheads and Whiteheads

Pimples are inflammations that occur on the skin due to clogged hair follicles or pores. Excess oil production by the sebaceous glands causes the accumulation of oil in the pores, along with dead skin cells, bacteria and other debris. These form plugs that block the pores and blackheads and whiteheads are formed. Infection by bacteria results in pus formation, thereby leading to development of pimples. Pimples occur primarily due to excess production of oil. This can be attributed to hormonal changes in the body.

A diet rich in vitamins A, B complex and E is very beneficial for alleviating the problem of pimples. Also drink plenty of water every day so that the toxins in your system are expelled from the body through the urine. Applying a paste of cinnamon powder and honey is known to be effective in treating pimples. You may also apply a mixture of a teaspoon each of lemon juice and cinnamon powder. Orange peel is another recommended remedy for pimples. Grind orange peel into a paste by adding some water and apply to the affected areas. Applying mint juice to the affected skin also helps in arresting infection. A solution of rose water and lime juice can also be applied to the pimples. Rubbing garlic on the affected areas will help to treat the pimples and will also prevent marks from developing on the skin.
